DC Way League: Fall 2021
On Saturday, September 11th the house league kicked off at the Fields at RFK Campus. We are hosting leagues for U7/U8 girls and boys, and U9/U10 girls and boys. Each week they will be focusing on a new, important soccer skill. Our week 1 skill was space awareness. We want our players to focus on what is going on around them at all times, with or without the ball. Am I being directly marked? Is there space I can run into? Can I get the ball where I am? Do I have time and space to shoot? These are all questions that players should be thinking about during games.
Once players arrive they are directed to the appropriate field, from there they participate in a warm-up and rules briefing. After the briefing and warm-up, they play. The game is two, 25-minute halves. The field is a 25x30 yard rectangle with two goals on each end, every two yards from the sideline. After the game players cool down and attend an MVP award ceremony. The MVP award is given to the player who best exhibits the skill of the week in their game.
The U7/U8 girls produced one of the best games of the weekend. It was played between the Silver and Pink teams. It was a back and forth goalfest that ended in the Silver team’s favor. They walked away with all three points in the 11-9 victory.
Week 2 of the house league provided even more mouth-watering fixtures. Saturday, September 18th brought some of the best house league action to date for DC Way. All three U7/U8 girls games were nail biters, seeing Lime, White, and Silver all pick up three points. The most thrilling game of the weekend was an 8-8 draw in the U9/U10 boys league between Red and Black.
During week 2 we wanted players to focus on their touch, specifically their first touch. The kids were tasked with making their first touch positive and into space. They were also asked to focus on when to take big or small touches. This allows players to directly demonstrate the spatial awareness skills that they learned last week and put them to test with the ball at their feet.
We look forward to seeing everybody back at the Fields at RFK on Saturday, September 25th for more house league action!
