Family Spotlight: The Jensen Family
Meet the Jensen family: Jay and his two sons—Connor (U15) and Garrett (U8)—who have been part of the DC Way community for at least seven years. Jay serves as Parent Manager for both the 2011 Boys Black and 2018 Boys White teams. We sat down with Jay to talk about their family's journey with DC Way Academy.
How long has your family been part of our club, and how did your journey with us begin?
For at least seven years! Started with some after-school clinics at our older son's elementary school SWS.
You have more than one child playing at the club—what has it been like watching them grow and develop through the different age groups?
Rewarding seeing them grow as players, make friends, and have fun with the beautiful game. When young, it was fun playing with them, but as they get older, they get better than you!
One word to describe what this club means to your family?
Growth—fun seeing the kids grow, but also see the DC Way Academy grow.
Favorite memory from your time with the team?
Some of the time between games at multiple game tournaments. Great moments of parents, kids, community. One time we introduced Denis to baseball, which he had never played, and he almost switched sports!
Advice you'd give to new families joining the club?
The Academy is good in itself, but you'll get that much more out of it that you put into it. Volunteer to help with team management and team events. They make for some of the best moments and community.
Who's the biggest soccer fan in your house—you or the kids?
The kids...so many soccer balls in the house. At least six!
Finish the sentence: Our club is special because…
They care deeply about the kids and their development.
