Age Group Change

2026-2027 Season

Starting with the 2026-27 season, youth soccer in the United States is shifting to a new age group structure. Instead of using the calendar year (January 1 to December 31) to determine age groups, the new system runs from August 1 to July 31.

This change was made by US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO to better align players with their school-grade peers and create more consistency across youth soccer nationwide.

Why the Change?

  • Better Alignment with School Year: The new structure matches the academic calendar, so players are grouped with their classmates. This makes social, emotional, and developmental transitions easier for players and families.

  • Fewer Players Caught in Between: Under the old calendar-year model, players born late in the year were often separated from their school friends. The August 1 cutoff reduces these situations.

  • A Return to a Proven Model: This August 1 to July 31 structure was used in youth soccer before 2017 and supports more balanced teams, healthier competition, and stronger long-term player development.

  • Consistency Across Youth Soccer: All major youth soccer organizations in the U.S. have adopted this updated framework, creating alignment across leagues and competitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Not necessarily. The revised age group framework is intended to better match soccer age groups with the school-year calendar, placing players alongside classmates and peers. While it may look like some players are staying in the same age group longer, this shift simply reflects a calendar realignment. For many players, the extra time can be a positive, offering more opportunity to build confidence, sharpen skills, and grow into leadership roles before advancing.

  • They will move up to a new age group under the new structure. This means they'll be playing with peers who are closer to their school grade.

  • They will stay in the same age group as last season. The extra time in their current age group can be a positive, offering more opportunity to build confidence, sharpen skills, and grow into leadership roles before advancing.

  • We encourage players to remain within their assigned age group to support appropriate development, competitive balance, and consistency with the new cutoff dates. That said, we recognize that every player's situation is unique. Requests to play up will be reviewed individually and discussed with coaches and club leadership before a decision is made.

  • In many cases, yes. Teams will adjust to the new age structure, but we're working to keep groups together where possible. If there are changes, coaches will communicate directly with families.

  • The new August 1 to July 31 system starts with the 2026-2027 seasonal year (fall 2026 tryouts and registration). The entire 2025-2026 season remains under the current birth year rules.
