Coach Spotlight: Chantae Blackwood

Meet Coach Chantae Blackwood, Head Coach of our U8 Girls team. Chantae's soccer journey took her from youth player to representing Jamaica on the international stage, and now she's giving back to the game by coaching the next generation at DC Way Academy.

Can you start by telling us a bit about your background in soccer and what drew you to coaching?

I began playing at the age of 6, and started club soccer at the age of 12. During high school I had the opportunity to represent my country, Jamaica, on the U15, U16, and U17 Women's National team. Afterwards, I began my college career and transferred twice before settling at Jackson State University where I graduated with my Bachelors.

The main aspect of coaching that drives my purpose at DC Way is the ability to give back to the game that gave me so much. Without soccer I would not be in the position I am today.

What is your overarching coaching philosophy in one sentence?

Soccer is 80% mental and 20% physical.

How do you help a player who is struggling with confidence or a specific skill on the field?

In my opinion, the best way to improve players is to isolate the moment. Once isolated, provide advice and offer optional routes thus prompting the player to think for themselves, while applying given instruction.

How can parents best support their child and the team from the sidelines?

The best way for parents to support their child from the sideline is to give constant encouragement and promote resilience. These factors can significantly influence players' attitudes and performance on the field.
